CLASS OF 99'-COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY FUTURISTS

President's Welcome

SAIT's homepage is your pathway into our world. Our
world includes over 100 programs which provide learners
with training to help them enter careers in Technology
Application, Business, Communications, Health,
Hospitality and Trades. We have one-year certificate
programming, two-year diploma programs, four-year
applied degree programs, three and four-year journeyman
programs, and custom designed programs ranging from a
few hours to four years.

We have exceptional facilities at our campuses. Most
notable are the specialized training environments related to
the 100 program areas. We also have 68 computer lab
facilities, including three laptop learning rooms, and our
entire campus is networked. I invite you to look into our Centres of Applied Technology
homepages. These centres are state-of-the-art facilities sponsored by industry and provide
opportunities for learning, technology transfer and applied research.

In 1997, 98% of our graduates obtained employment within six months of graduation. This
statistic is a tribute to the direction and support we obtain from industry in the design and
delivery of our programs. Our instructors are primarily hired from industry and form the
backbone of our goal of preparing graduates to enter the workplace ready to be
productive.

Our most significant growth areas are in training for the Business and Industry community,
International Training, and Distributed Learning. The growth rate in these areas has
averaged 20 per cent each year over the last four years. Our primary areas of investment
are in our Centres of Applied Technology and in Distributed Learning. One of our key
strategic goals is to become the prime provider of Distributed Learning in Technology.

SAIT is very active in international education. Over the last decade, we've provided training
and training consultancy in 13 countries around the world. We've also served thousands of
students from more than 30 different countries in our full-time programs.

SAIT prides itself on its strong programming and on our planning and management
practices that have positioned us as one of the best technology institutions in the world.

Please investigate the home pages describing some of our activities in these areas.

SOUTHERN ALBERTA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AT A..GLANCE!
SAIT was founded in 1916 to help meet the demand for skilled technologists, technicians and tradespeople in the province. Offering training to a mere five
students when it first opened its doors, the Institute now serves close to 40,000 learners a year. SAIT's reputation is growing well beyond the boundaries of the
province, with training now offered to learners on five continents. The main SAIT campus is located in northwest Calgary, overlooking the river valley and downtown Calgary. There is also a satellite campus, called SAIT 2,
located in northeast Calgary. Many apprentice courses are located at SAIT Heritage Hall, constructed in 1921, is the oldest building on campus. It has been declared a Provincial Historical Building by the Government of Alberta.
This building houses the Registrar's Office, Continuing Education offices, Power Engineering department offices, Student Employment and Counselling, and a
number of administrative departments.

To the west of Heritage Hall is the Campus Centre building which houses recreation and meeting facilities. The recreation facilities include a gym, pool, squash
and racquetball courts, ice rink, and weight room. Also the student lounge, Alumni association and student newspaper are operated from this location. To the east of Heritage Hall is the largest structure on campus. The Burns Building houses the library, a cafeteria, study rooms, some administrative departments
and the Architectural and Civil Engineering Department, Business Department, Communication Arts department, Energy and Natural Resources Department,
Health Sciences Department, and the Mathematics, Physics and Computing Department.

Proceeding north on campus we pass the John Ware Building which houses the Electronics labs and Hospitality Careers Department. At the east end of this
building is the Highwood Dining Room, a student operated dining lounge which serves nightly gourmet dinners and is open to the public. In the northeast corner of the campus is Owasina Hall, the student residence. Owasina Hall offers convenient on-campus living, housing 491 students in 204
self-contained apartment style residence suites.

To the west of the residence (and just east of the staff parkade) is the Crandell Building. This complex houses the bookstore, Electrical/ Electronics
Department. The final stop on our tour is the Thomas Riley building, which is located on the northwest boarder of the campus. This large complex houses the Architectural
and Civil Engineering Technologies Department, Automotive-Diesel Department, Electrical labs, and Mechanical Trades and Technologies Department.
